Jen and Jon, obviously.
Quill was started by Jen and Jon Sustar. Jen is a licensed therapist with her own private practice (in addition to being so many other wonderful things, but that's probably the critical detail here). Jon is a computer engineer who has his own software development consulting company. Jen and Jon have two beautiful kids, although their children have no direct contributions to Quill outside of moral support.
The quick summary of the Quill story is: Jon was dabbling with some various business ideas utilizing AI. While learning from Jon what was possible with this new technology, Jen thought that it could be good at helping with progress notes.
Jon put together a quick proof of concept, Jen and her colleagues tested it out, those colleagues began to ask when they could start paying money for this service, and the rest is history! (Following a substantial investment in time and energy to develop and fully test this new service!) Quill officially launched in early May 2024.
This is the first time Jen and Jon have ever collaborated on a business venture, but it's been incredible so far. With Jen's professional background in therapy plus Jon's professional background in software development, it's been very fun — and the ability to quickly release new features has been rewarding to both them and the users.
Core Philosophy
Jen and Jon's philosophy with Quill is pretty simple. Listen to and help therapists! Therapists are the experts, and Quill can help them put their expert thoughts down on paper — but Quill will not do the thinking for them. Quill excels at taking unorganized thoughts from therapists and reorganizing them into the required progress note formats. This results in better and more efficient notes, but it still requires the therapist to make the necessary observations and conclusions. AI should not play a role in that.
