Audio Recording Improvements

You'll notice a few improvements now when you're recording your session summaries.

Over the past few months, we've heard from a few folks who have recorded their session summary only to then have that summary somehow fail to make its way to Quill to be transcribed and converted into a progress note. And that is so frustrating!

We've worked closely with these folks, and oftentimes, this is the result of a microphone issue -- maybe the correct microphone wasn't selected, the microphone wasn't fully plugged in, your browser didn't have permission to use the microphone, etc. Microphones can be complicated and frustrating sometimes! And worse, you don't realize there's even an issue until you've finished recording the summary of your session.

But we've now made two improvements to Quill to hopefully highlight this issue before you've finished your recording.

Volume Graph

First, there's now a little volume graph that is updated during your recording. You'll see this little line go up and down, based on the volume of your voice. 99.9% of the time, you can completely ignore this. But if this line is flat, your microphone is not picking up anything! Uh oh, time to investigate!

Sound of Silence

Second, if Quill detects 5 seconds of silence, it will show a little alert box, letting you know that it's been silent. It's totally fine if you're just taking a 5 second breather. But if you actually talking that entire time, we want you to know that, hey, Quill hasn't heard a thing! Again, time to investigate! Maybe it's a microphone issue.

These microphone issues are the most difficult for us at Quill to help resolve, because it all comes down to the user's physical setup -- which laptop or phone you have, which microphone you're using, etc. But we're hoping that with these improvements to our recording interface, we'll alert you ASAP if things are going awry. We want your recording to go as smoothly as you do!

As always, if you ever run into issues, please send us an email! We want to help. And your feedback leads to useful updates like this one! Email Jon at jon@quilltherapynotes.com.

Update on 10/16/2024: We've added some troubleshooting tips for audio recording issues. Hopefully that can help you figure out what's going on with your microphone!
