It's funny -- there's been a lot of talk about these new "AI therapists" like Ash. And all the criticism is valid: they can't really capture or respond to the emotion, the body language, or the shared human experience that makes actual therapy… therapy.
And here's the big M. Night Shyamalan* twist:
The same thing is true for any progress notes generated straight from a session transcript. The AI is only getting half the story -- literally just the words. No tone. No emotion. No pauses. No backstory or context. Just… words.
Oh, and just like the output of "AI therapists", these auto‑generated notes also miss the observations, assessments, and reflections of a real (human) therapist -- insights that are never even spoken out loud in session.
(*Yes, I know. A reference from 1999.)
At Quill, we rely on the human therapist to tell us what's important about a session. Details that may or may not have been verbally uttered during the session. And then we write the therapy note. (And remember, we don't record the session at all -- for so many reasons.)
